Education, love and dignity in East Africa
Uganda is a country of remarkable contrasts: rich natural beauty and cultural diversity exist alongside deep poverty, orphanhood, and educational inequality. Many children are deprived of their most basic rights—education, nourishment, and care.
Our work in Uganda began with a simple mission: to stand beside children in need, with respect, consistency, and genuine humanity. Since 2014, we’ve built relationships rooted in love and support, centred around two pillars: a secondary school in Kayunga and the Saint Mary of Egypt Orphanage in Monte.

Kayunga Secondary School: Computers & Classrooms
Children hungry for knowledge and opportunity
In Kayunga, a lower and upper secondary school welcomes more than 500 students, most from extremely poor families—many of them orphans. On our first visit, we were moved by the discipline, kindness, and eagerness to learn shown by the children, despite the hardship they face.
Mr. Theodoros Kompe, the school’s headmaster, is a model of dedication. With very limited resources, he works tirelessly to ensure no child is excluded, even if their family cannot afford tuition.
Our support so far:
-
2014: Donated 6 computers, introducing students to modern technology for the first time.
-
2018: Funded the construction of additional classrooms, as some classes had up to 50 students.
-
2020: Donated 2 more computers, further supporting ICT education.
Every small contribution has become a force multiplier in the hands of these children—children who deserve the same opportunities as any child, anywhere in the world.

Saint Mary of Egypt Orphanage – Monte
A home of love for 60 children
In the town of Monte, the heart of our mission beats inside a unique orphanage run by Eldress Maria and Sister Theoxeni—two devoted Orthodox nuns who have given their lives to the children of Uganda. With love, strength, and humility, they care for 60 children, aged three to seventeen, boys and girls alike.
These children receive no state support, no steady funding—only prayer, giving, and the presence of those who care. And we are proud to be part of that presence—steady, respectful, and deeply committed.
How we’ve helped:
-
Donated a sewing machine, so the sisters can make clothing and school uniforms for the children—and generate income for food, medicine, and school fees.
-
Provided 200 chicks, which help feed the children and supply fresh eggs.
-
Offered financial support for daily essentials.
This orphanage is not just a shelter—it is a family, where each child is seen, valued, and given a future.

Summer Camp in Uganda
Ten days that changed our lives
In the summer of 2014, a group of educators from the Greek organisation Simvoli travelled to Monte to run a summer camp for the orphanage children. What they experienced, as they shared later, was unforgettable—days full of light, emotion, and pure connection.
Each day included:
-
Creative play in the orphanage courtyard
-
Art, music and theatre workshops
-
Spiritual moments, group prayer, and children’s chanting
-
Lessons with love and laughter
-
Evenings around the fire, singing songs from Greece and Uganda
These ten days were filled not with luxury—but with abundant love.

Why do we continue?
Because hope has faces. It’s the child who ran into our arms. The headmaster who fights to keep the school open. The nun sewing in the dark. The student who writes on the chalkboard, dreaming of becoming a doctor.
And because we cannot close our eyes to a country so poor, yet so rich in light.

Volunteer Testimony
"The children had nothing. And yet, they gave us everything—
their trust, their smiles, their pure, unconditional love.Uganda is now part of our hearts. "
